Day Three: Practice and Sea World

San Diego – Under a brilliant sky, the Aflac All-Americans held their first competitive scrimmage before a crowd of family and college and major league baseball scout Friday morning at the University of San Diego’s Cunningham Field.

If what happened in scrimmage is any indication of what can be expected Sunday afternoon, then fans should expect a pitchers’ duel. The guys on the mound were clearly ahead of the hitters. And even when somebody put the ball in play, the defense bailed them out with stellar plays like the one stab, and long throw to first base for the out made by Tony Wolters, a middle infielder from Vista. Provided he does not start a professional baseball career next year, that play was a tease for USD fans as Wolters has signed to play with the Toreros.

Following lunch the players took off for a VIP trip to Sea World. The evening wound down with three significant events. First, they were presented with personalized baseball bats from Rawlings. They then attended a baseball seminar that featured a How-To on professional baseball from former Major Leaguer Morgan Ensberg. The final event of the night was the All-Americans taking part in signing their baseball cards made courtesy of Topps.

Saturday will again be packed for the players. After their morning workout, they will participate in the first round of the home run derby. The top sluggers will advance to the final round Sunday afternoon.

During the evening, the All-Americans will meet with the kids from the Aflac Cancer Center, meet with the Honorary Chairman, Ozzie Smith, and attend the highly anticipated Aflac Awards Dinner.
